The hidden heroes at Thusanang
February 28th was a day of learning and connection for the Kamaroutes team. We had the privilege of visiting Africa Food for Thought, an organization dedicated to battling food insecurity in South Africa, and witnessing their impactful work firsthand.
A Day of Learning and Connection
Our day began at Africa Food for Thought‘s Roodepoort office, where Siphokazi Sibiya passionately shared the organization’s vision and ongoing projects. We learned about their comprehensive feeding programs, designed to support families in townships and ensure that children have the nourishment they need to thrive in school. The importance they place on education, understanding that a full stomach is the foundation for a focused mind, truly resonated with us.

A visit to Thusanang, the heartbeat of the community
Following our insightful meeting, we journeyed to Thusanang, a township home to the Thusanang Early Childhood Development (ECD) center. Melitah Tseleng, the dedicated headmistress, has been a pillar of strength, initially funding the center’s educational efforts for Grade R to 1 from her own resources. Now, with the support of Africa Food for Thought, her vision is expanding.
Our time at Thusanang was deeply moving. We spent precious moments with the children, engaging in playful activities and helping prepare their lunches. The joy and enthusiasm of the 55 children were infectious, and we were proud to contribute food donations to support their ongoing needs.
Inside the classroom: a foundation for growth
The ECD itself is a testament to the community’s dedication, boasting three classrooms, a play area, and a functional kitchen. We observed the structured learning environment, witnessing the Grade 1 pupils diligently practicing reading, recognizing action sequences, and mastering numbers. The children’s attentive listening and eagerness to learn were truly inspiring. Even simple routines, like hand sanitising after a bathroom break, were carried out with a sense of purpose.
Lunchtime was a delightful experience. Before the meal, the children participated in fun educational games, reinforcing their knowledge of colours and body parts. Then, with our team assisting Sista Berenice in the kitchen and setting the tables, the children enjoyed a nourishing meal. As they ate, we expressed our gratitude to the Thusanang team for their incredible work and bid them a fond farewell.
Lunchtime: Nourishing the body and the mind
This experience was incredibly rewarding, offering a tangible glimpse into the impact of community-driven initiatives. We were deeply moved by the dedication of Africa Food for Thought and the unwavering commitment of the Thusanang ECD team.
Our commitment to these communities doesn’t end here. We’re already planning our next initiative: a career day with the older students at Thusanang. We believe in empowering the next generation with knowledge and opportunities, and we’re excited to continue supporting their journey.
