H.E.L.P. for Children: Kamaroutes & Healing Leaves’ impact

Childhood trauma is a significant issue, with far-reaching consequences for individuals and communities. Statistics reveal alarming rates of abuse and neglect among South African youth, leading to increased risks of mental health challenges. Recognizing this critical need, Healing Leaves has developed the H.E.L.P (Helping Kids Cope) Programme.

Addressing the Trauma Gap

The H.E.L.P Programme is designed to equip parents, teachers, caregivers, and anyone working with children with the tools and knowledge necessary to support those who have experienced trauma. It’s important to note that this program does not replace professional mental health treatment. Instead, it provides vital support in a country where access to mental health professionals is limited.

Marthé Kotze, the program’s creator and facilitator, brings a wealth of experience to the table. With degrees in Journalism and Human Rights, and years of work in the NGO sector, coupled with her own personal journey of overcoming childhood trauma, she is uniquely positioned to empower others.

The H.E.L.P training covers essential topics, including:

  • Definitions and causes of trauma
  • Symptoms of trauma in children of various ages
  • A four-step approach to supporting and empowering children who have experienced trauma
  • Coping skills for children who have experienced trauma

Kamaroutes’ Commitment to Community Support

Kamaroutes is proud to partner with Healing Leaves, contributing a portion of each confirmed booking to sponsor H.E.L.P kits for vulnerable children. Since November 2023, this partnership has resulted in over 53 H.E.L.P kits being donated, totalling approximately R13,200. Each Kamaroutes client receives a confirmation PDF, acknowledging their contribution and the impact they have made.

The origins of Healing Leaves

Founded in 1997 by André and Dienie Kotze, Healing Leaves has a long history of supporting vulnerable populations in the Free State. Initially focused on their local community of Cornelia, the organization has expanded its reach to encompass youth development, job creation, education, entrepreneur development, and support for children affected by HIV/AIDS.

Healing Leaves’ mission is to restore dignity to those who have experienced trauma and adversity through community-based relational intervention programs. The H.E.L.P Programme is a testament to this mission.

Healing leaves – HELP Toolkit planning

Positive Impact at Wonderboom-Suid Primary School

Imagine the scene: students actively participating in activities designed to help them understand and manage their feelings, guided by the compassionate expertise of Healing Leaves’ facilitators. This impactful session wouldn’t have been possible without the generous sponsorship of Kamaroutes, who provided 35 Self-soothing Toolkits. These toolkits were carefully filled with items designed to empower students in moments of stress and anxiety. This collaboration between Healing Leaves and Kamaroutes serves as a reminder of the difference that can be made when organizations come together to prioritize the well-being of our communities.
